Symposium 1 of the
Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting
JENAM 2008
"NEW CHALLENGES TO EUROPEAN ASTRONOMY"
08–10 September 2008
Vienna, Austria
THE EVENT
The 2008 Joint European and National Astronomy Meeting (JENAM) was held on 08–12 September 2008 at the University of Vienna, Austria. Its unifying theme was to explore the "Challenges to European Astronomy". In this framework, ESO and Opticon jointly organized one of the nine JENAM 2008 symposia, namely Symposium 1 on Science with the E-ELT. The Symposium comprised 3 sessions, which took place in the afternoons of 08 and 09 Sep, and in the morning of 10 Sep 2008 (full JENAM 2008 event schedule).
This Symposium was a timely opportunity to discuss and assess the main science goals of a major potential ground-based observing facility for European astronomy, the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The E-ELT project was then in the middle of its 3-year (2007–2009) detailed design phase with the decision to proceed with construction expected for early 2010. Prime motivations for this Symposium were to inform the community on the scientific perspectives opened up by such a facility and, especially, to get its feedback on the science goals and requirements needed to help make the E-ELT the best possible scientific tool for European astronomy in the coming decades.
