Travelling to Garching
Garching lies about 13 km north-east of Munich and 17 km south-west of Munich international airport (Franz Josef Strauss). Please follow these instructions to travel to Garching.
See this Overview for an indicative summary, with some caveats, of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, ESO, Ismaning and Munich city centre. We recommend to consult the electronic time tables of the Munich tranportation network MVV, and of the German Railways.
Instructions for travelling to the workshop venue
We advise all participants to travel to the workshop venue with the underground train (U-Bahn), line U6. The U-Bahn station in Garching is centrally located and within close reach of all hotels and is indicated with a large blue "U"-sign. Take the underground train (U-Bahn) line U6, with destination "Garching Forschungszentrum" (Garching Research Campus) - this is the last stop on the line. Exit the station at the rear end of the train and follow the sign for ESO (see map).Here is some more information on the use of public transport. Timetables can be found here.
Workshop venue
The workshop will be held in the ESO Auditorium, Karl-Schwarzschild-Str. 2, Garching b. München. To accommodate the large number of participants, there will also be an interactive videolink from the Auditorium to room 231/232.

Registration
Registration will take place on Tuesday, 16 November 2010, between 13:00 and 14:00 in front of the ESO Auditorium.
Registration Fee
There will be a registration fee of 100 Euro (waived for PhD students) payable at the registration desk in cash or via credit card. For payment by credit card, please fill in the form and either fax it to the organisers ahead of time at the secure fax number (+49) 89 320 06 480 (note that this is different from the number given above) or bring it to the registration desk.
Presentations
We will have available in the meeting room a Windows laptop and a Mac laptop with standard presentation software. Please bring your presentation on a memory stick (pdf preferred) and give it to one of the ESO persons wearing a yellow badge well before the session in which you talk. Using your own laptop is strongly discouraged.Poster Papers
The poster papers will be on display in the Council Room (114) at the ESO Headquarters for the duration of the workshop. The display area available per poster is limited to 60 cm (w) x 100 cm (h). Hence the accepted poster size is A1 (59.4 cm x 84.1 cm). There will be a dedicated poster session on Wednesday, 17 November, from 17:10 to 19:00.Internet and email
Open wireless internet is available in most parts of the ESO building. In addition, 3 PCs will be set up in room 231/232.
Lunch
We suggest that you have lunch at the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute, located about 5 minutes walk from the workshop room. (See map of the campus. The canteen is marked C2.) The opening hours are: Dining hall: Mo.-Th. 11:15 - 13:45; Fr. 11:15 - 13:30. Cafeteria: Mo.-Th. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 16:30; Fr. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 14:00. Only cash is accepted. Prices for a main course range from about 4 to 6 Euros.
Welcome Reception
The welcome reception will be held at ESO on Tuesday evening, 16 November, from 18:00 to 19:30. All registered participants and accompanying persons are invited.Workshop Dinner
The workshop Dinner will take place at Gasthof Neuwirt in the centre of Garching on Thursday evening, 18 November, from 19:00 to 22:00 hrs, starting with a welcome drink. All workshop participants are invited to join, without additional charge. The cost for accompanying persons is EUR 30 which can be paid at the time of registration. If you do not plan to attend the dinner, please let us know.Bank service
There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks may close during lunch time and have otherwise opening hours grossly different from shops.
Weather
Munich weather in November unfortunately tends to be cool to cold and wet. So you should come prepared for this. Daytime temperatures are anywhere between 0-10 C. For more information, see Weather Online.
