Conference Venue

Since the large number of participants exceeds the seating capacity of the ESO Headquarters auditorium, the Symposium will be held in Garching in the Auditorium MW001 of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University München (see the map and the overview of the Garching Research Institute area), and not at ESO Headquarters. The Auditorium is just a 10-minute walk away from ESO Headquarters. The address is Bolzmannstr. 15, Garching.

Location

Munich is located in southern Germany. The Symposium venue and ESO Headquarters are situated just north of the town of Garching, a suburb to the north of Munich (overview map; map of Garching). Munich offers excellent public transport. Garching can be reached by bus in combination with U-Bahn (underground) or S-Bahn (commuter train).

How to get there

The airport is called Munich/München FranzJoseph Strauss. From the airport, you can choose between airport bus, S-Bahn or taxi to go to your hotel.

If you arrive by train at the Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), you can reach Garching by taking the U-Bahn U6 to Garching-Hochbrück (see map below for connections), then bus 291 to Garching. Ismaning has a direct S-Bahn connection (S 8) from the airport and the Hauptbahnhof.

Shuttle buses will be organized to take you to and from your hotel to the Symposium venue (morning and evening, see the timetable). If you still prefer public transport, please see the details below under "Local Transport".

Parking Please note that parking space is limited close to the Symposium venue.

Local Transport - Overview

See the Overview Table for a summary of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, Symposium venue, Ismaning and Munich city centre.

More travel instructions can be found on the ESO Travel and Local Information pages.

Luncheons

There is a small canteen in the Symposium venue building, where you can have a simple lunch for around 3-5 EUR. The size of this canteen will not allow for all Symposium participants lunching there at the same time. The opening hours are Monday-Thursday from 08:30-15:00, Friday from 08:30-14:15.

An alternative is the Canteen of The Technical University (see overview), the Mensa, that serves lunch Monday-Thursday from 11:00-13:45, Friday from 11:00-13:30. Because of the rather complicated payment system in the Mensa, we recommend participants to instead visit the Cafeteria, which is open Monday-Thursday from 08:30-15:45 and Friday from 08:30-14:15 (Address: Lichtenbergstrasse 2).

Another alternative is the Canteen of the Max-Planck Institute (see overview). Opening hours are Monday - Thursday from 11:15-13:45 and Friday from 11:15-13:30. The Cafeteria is opened: Monday-Thursday from 08:30-11:00 and 11:30- 16:30, Friday from 08:30-11:00 and 11:30-14:00.

There is also a "Döner Kebab" stand within walking distance from the Symposium venue (see overview).

Security Participants who walk to the Max-Plack-Institute Canteen for lunch have to pass through a gate to enter the Max-Plack-Institute area. At the gate, the Symposium name badge or an identity card has to be shown to allow access.
Bank Service

Banks and cash-points can be found in Garching. All main credit cards are accepted (with PIN code).

There is also a cash-point close to the bus stop ("Forschungsreaktor") opposite the Symposium venue. This takes EC bank cards (charge EUR 3.00), VISA and Master credit cards (charge EUR 5.00).

Munich City See the home page of the Munich Tourist Office to find out about events in the city.
Travel Agency The ESO Travel Agency Carlson Wagon-Lits, located at ESO Headquarters (Office Number 203; behind the Reception), can help you with travel arrangements. The opening hours are Monday-Thursday from 09:00-16:30 and Friday from 09:00-16:00. The telephone number is: + 49 89 32006 208.
Weather The Munich weather in March has daytime temperatures ranging from 0-15 degrees C. Showers can occur. For more information, see the Yahoo Munich weather forecast
