ESO Conference Proceedings 2.0 at Zenodo
In order to preserve a record of conferences and workshops and instead of compiling conference proceedings, the ESO Library & Information Centre would like to make presentation slides and posters available through Zenodo, a CERN-developed platform for permanent storage of digital content.
The main advantages of Zenodo are that the content will be
- citable: Zenodo will assign DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) to all submissions
- discoverable: the ESO Library will notify ADS about the conference “collection”, and they will harvest the metadata
- archived: Zenodo will preserve the material permanently
Examples
ESO conferences at Zenodo is a complete list of all conferences with links to their webpages, Zenodo records and ADS records.

Important information for presenters (for conferences held until Dec. 2023)
PDFs of all talks and posters should be uploaded by the presenters to Zenodo under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC-BY) which allows re-distribution and re-use of a licensed work on the condition that the creator is appropriately credited.
When you upload your contribution please use the latest version. Once a presentation is uploaded to Zenodo it will be indexed in the ADS (Astrophysics Data System) and is intended to be available permanently, so only final versions which are suitable for public distribution should be uploaded. More information about the privacy policy of Zenodo can be found at https://about.zenodo.org/privacy-policy/.
Important information for presenters (for conferences held in Jan. 2024 and later)
In order to facilitate easy and straight-forward creation of ESO Conference Proceedings at Zenodo without any workload for presenter, the procedure will be amended for conferences held in 2024 and later.
Presentations made available through Zenodo will receive a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and be indexed in the ADS (Astrophysics Data System). They will be made available under a Creative Commons 4.0 (Attribution) license (CC BY), and are intended to be available permanently, so only final versions which are suitable for public distribution should be included. More information about the privacy policy of Zenodo can be found at https://about.zenodo.org/privacy-policy/.
The ESO Librarians are in charge of the “publishing” process. They will establish a Zenodo collection specifically for the conference, consisting of presentation slides and/or posters presented at that event. In order to do so, presenteers are asked for their permission to compile the ESO Conference Proceedings 2.0 at Zenodo for the conference, and to process and make available presenters' personal information, specifically the names and affiliations (along with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor) IDs, if wanted):
Permission is granted to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) to upload presentation slides and/or posters to the Zenodo platform with the purpose of creating conference proceedings, and to process and make available personal information to the extent necessary. Presenters confirm that they have the right to use and make publicly available all materials used in their slides/posters, such as logos, figures, or images, and that they understand that the presentation slides/posters will be made available under a CC-BY license which allows re-users to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, including for commercial use, so long as attribution is given to the creator. ESO is released from any and all claims and demands arising from the content made available.
