ESO-GRUBER SUMMER SCHOOL:
FROM NEARBY WORLDS TO DISTANT GALAXIES
2 - 6 JUNE 2025
GARCHING NEAR MUNICH, GERMANY
Are you interested in learning about how to use ground- and space-based telescope data? Are you interested in learning about a broad range of topics in astronomy? Then this summer school is the perfect opportunity for you! The ESO-Gruber summer school will provide lectures on topics of Exoplanets, Star and planet formation, Galactic astronomy, Transients, AGNs, Gravitational waves, Galaxy evolution, and high-redshift universe. The lectures will be focused on the most interesting questions currently under debate in each topic. There will also be plenty of time for hands-on experience with archival data from the current most powerful telescopes in the world; ALMA, VLA, JWST, VLT, and VLTI. The hands-on session for each telescope will have exercises on various topics covered by the school so that you can learn to use the data in a way that is most relevant to your interest.
The lectures will conclude over the first three days (Monday-Wednesday), while the hands-on sessions will run throughout the week. We will also assign you to a group at the start of the week to work together on a mini research project. The projects will be on gathering information on an under-debate question in a field of astronomy covered by the school. You will then have the opportunity to present your findings to rest of the school on the final day (Friday).
Some practical information:
The school will be primarily in-person with a hybrid component for the lectures. The number of in-person participation is limited to 20. Students will be selected for the programme based on their academic potential and likelihood to significantly benefit from the experience. This school is an opportunity for those from STEM fields who are currently an M.Sc. or first year Ph.D. students. The participants must be proficient in both spoken and written English (the working language of the program).
Students that need a visa to travel/work in Germany are responsible for obtaining the visa. Successful applicants are warmly encouraged to start the procedure as soon as they receive the offer to attend the programme (i.e., ~three months before the start of the programme). The ESO Human Resources department will be able to provide them with any specific required documents for the visa request to the consulate/embassy.
The students are responsible for their accommodation and travel. There is limited available funding support and the applications will be considered if they choose ‘yes’ in the relevant question on the application form. The current available funding gives priority to students who are from developing countries.
