Travelling to Garching
Garching lies about 13 km north-east of Munich and 17 km south-west of Munich international airport (Franz Josef Strauss). Please follow these instructions to travel to Garching.
See this Overview for an indicative summary, with some caveats, of public transport possibilities between the airport, Garching, ESO, Ismaning and Munich city centre. We recommend to consult the electronic time tables of the Munich tranportation network MVV, and of the German Railways.
Workshop venue
The workshop will be held in the Neue Seminarraum (New Seminar Room) of the Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE), Giessenbachstr., 85748 Garching. The MPE seminar room is at two minutes walking distance from the ESO headquarters.
Instructions for travelling to the workshop venue
The conference venue is easily reached by public transport from either Garching or Munich. Take the underground train (U-Bahn) line U6, with destination "Garching Forschungszentrum" (Garching Research Campus) - this is the last stop on the line. Exit the station at the rear end of the train. Ahead and to the left, you will see the main entrance gate of the Max Planck Institute campus.The MPE auditorium is only a 5-minute walk from the station (see map).Here is some more information on the use of public transport.

Registration
Registration will take place in front of the Neue Seminarraum at the MPE on Tuesday, 3 November, from 8:00 till 14:00. NOTE: Since the workshop is overbooked, no new participants can be accepted, i.e. on-site registration will not be possible.
Registration Fee
There will be a registration fee of 100 Euro (waived for PhD students) payable at the registration desk in cash EURO only.
Poster Papers
The poster papers will be on display in the Alte Seminarraum (old seminar room) at the MPE. The display area available per poster is 115cm (high) x 70cm (wide) to fit a poster, paper size A1. The poster should therefore have the following size: 59.4cm or 23.4in (wide) x 84.1cm or 33.1in (high) in portrait format. Note that there will be 2 poster display periods: the first (A) from Tuesday through Wednesday evening, and the second (B) from Thursday morning through Friday. Internet and email
Wireless internet is available at the MPE building. Instructions will be posted. Owing to the very large number of participants and safety regulations, the usage of power cords in the auditorium will have to be strictly controlled. Some PCs will be made available in the Council Room at ESO.
Lunch
We suggest that you have lunch at the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute, located about 2 minutes walk from the conference room. (See map of the campus. The canteen is marked C2.) The opening hours are: Dining hall: Mo.-Th. 11:15 - 13:45; Fr. 11:15 - 13:30. Cafeteria: Mo.-Th. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 16:30; Fr. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 14:00. Only cash is accepted. Prices for a main course range from about 4 to 6 Euros.
Workshop Dinner
The Workshop Dinner will take place at Gasthof Neuwirt in the centre of Garching on Wednesday evening, November 4, from 18:30 to 22:00 hrs, starting with a welcome drink. All workshop participants are invited to join, without additional charge. The cost for accompanying persons is EUR 30 which can be paid at the time of registration. If you do not plan to attend the dinner, please let us know.

Bank service
There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks may close during lunch time and have otherwise opening hours grossly different from shops.
Weather
Munich weather in November unfortunately tends to be cool to cold and wet. So you should come prepared for this. Daytime temperatures are anywhere between 0-10 C. For more information, see Weather Online.
