Ein zeitloses Asyl – Das ESO-Gästehaus damals und heute
Die ESO wird in diesem Jahr 50 Jahre alt, und um dieses wichtige Jubiläum zu feiern, werfen wir einen Blick in unsere Vergangenheit. Während des gesamten Jahres wird einmal pro Monat ein spezielles „Damals und Heute“-Bild der Woche illustrieren, wie sich die Dinge auf La Silla, am Paranal-Observatorium, in den ESO-Büros in Santiago de Chile und am Hauptsitz der ESO in Garching bei München über die Jahrzehnte verändert haben.
Diesen Monat zeigen wir Ihnen einen Teil der ESO, der nahezu zeitlos erscheint. Was könnte nach einem langen Interkontinentalflug nach Santiago de Chile oder einer Nachtschicht mit Beobachtungen an den Teleskopen besser sein als ein komfortabler Stützpunkt zur Entspannung und Erholung für den nächsten Teil der Reise? Seit den frühesten Jahren der Organisation hat das ESO-Gästehaus in Santiago den Besuchern der Observatorien in Chile genau das ermöglicht. Unsere „Damals und Heute“-Aufnahmen zeigen diesen Monat die Gästehaus-Lounge im Jahr 1996 und in der heutigen Zeit.
Das Gästehaus ist eine große Villa in einem ruhigen Teil der chilenischen Hauptstadt. Es ist unter ESO-Mitarbeitern und Gastwissenschaftlern auf der langen Reise zwischen Europa und den abgelegenen Observatoriumsanlagen als gastfreundlicher Ort zum Verweilen bekannt. Fast alle europäischen Astronomen, die La Silla, den Paranal oder Chajnantor besuchen, nutzen dieses Gästehaus als Durchgangsstation. Hier kann man sich von der Reise erholen, mit anderen Astronomen plaudern, sich auf seine Beobachtungen vorbereiten und – für Neuzugänge – vielleicht den ersten Blick auf den südlichen Nachthimmel zu werfen.
Anfang des Jahres 1964 wurde mit den zunehmenden ESO-Aktivitäten in Santiago beschlossen eine Reiseunterkunft in der Stadt zu bauen, so dass die ESO unabhängig vom dortigen Hotelangebot ist. Der Erwerb des Gästehauses wurde im März 1965 abgeschlossen und zunächst wurde es als Verwaltungsgebäude und Besucherunterkunft verwendet. In den frühen 1970ern wurden die offiziellen ESO-Büros in ein neues Gebäude in den Stadtteil Vitacura verlegt, ein paar Kilometer entfernt. Das Gästehaus konnte jetzt exklusiv für den Komfort und die Bequemlichkeit reisemüder Astronomen und anderer Mitarbeiter genutzt werden.
Wie auf den beiden Bildern zu sehen ist, hat sich das Gästehaus über die Jahre nicht stark verändert. Zwar ist mittlerweile WLAN verfügbar und eine moderne Kaffeemaschine steht bereit, aber das Gästehaus ist dennoch ein entspannender und friedlicher Zufluchtsort geblieben. Der perfekte Ort zur Vorbereitung auf strapaziöse, aber spannende Beobachtungsnächte und vielleicht auch auf die nächste große Entdeckung.
