Een tijdloos toevluchtsoord in Santiago – Het ESO-gastenverblijf, toen en nu
ESO wordt dit jaar vijftig, en om dit jubileum te vieren, geven we u een glimp van onze geschiedenis. In 2012 laat een maandelijkse, ‘toen-en-nu’-Foto van de Week zien wat er de laatste decennia veranderd is bij de observatoria La Silla en Paranal, de ESO-faciliteiten in Santiago, Chili en het hoofdkantoor in Garching nabij Munchen, Duitsland.
Deze maand laten wij een deel van ESO zien dat tijdloos aanvoelt. Na een lange continentale vlucht naar Santiago of nachtdiensten gedurende observaties met de telescopen, wat is er aangenamer dan een comfortabele tussenstop om bij te komen voor de rest van de reis? Het ESO-gastenverblijf in Santiago maakt precies dit mogelijk voor de bezoekers van de observatoria in Chili sinds de eerste jaren van de organisatie. Op de ‘toen-en-nu’-foto van deze maand staat de zitkamer van het gastenverblijf in 1996 en nu.
Het gastenverblijf is een grote villa in een rustig deel van de Chileense hoofdstad. Het staat bekend onder het ESO-personeel en bezoekende astronomen als een gastvrije en uitnodigende rustplek op de lange reis van Europa naar de afgelegen observatoria. Vrijwel alle Europese astronomen die La Silla, Paranal of Chajnantor bezoeken doen ook het gastenverblijf aan. Hier kunnen ze bijkomen van de reis, bijpraten met andere astronomen, voorbereidingen treffen voor hun observaties en – voor nieuwelingen – een eerste glimp opvangen van de zuidelijke, nachtelijke hemel.
De ESO besloot al in 1964 een optrekje in de stad te verkrijgen zodat ze, met de toenemende activiteiten van ESO in Santiago, niet afhankelijk is van hotels. De verwerving van het gastenverblijf was afgerond in 1965. Het werd oorspronkelijk zowel gebruikt als kantoor en verblijf voor gasten. In het begin van de jaren zeventig werden de officiële ESO-kantoren verhuist naar het nieuwe gebouw in Vitacura, een paar kilometer verderop in de stad. Hierdoor kon het gasthuis exclusief gebruikt worden voor het comfort en gemak van astronomen die reismoe zijn en ander personeel.
Zoals te zien is op deze twee foto’s, is het gastenverblijf niet veel veranderd in de loop van de jaren. Draadloos internet is aanwezig en een moderner koffieautomaat, maar het gastenverblijf is nog steeds een ontspannen en rustig toevluchtsoord. De perfecte plek om te relaxen en voor te bereiden op een slopende maar opwindende nacht van observaties, en misschien de volgende grote ontdekking.
