The AUI/NRAO initiative PROVOCA |
---|
"Women continue to be under-represented in Astronomy and STEM in general. The AUI/NRAO PROVOCA initiative has been building a safe space for female STEM professionals, girls and young women since 2018. Initially, as one-time opportunities and later on as a year-long mentorship program focused on increasing knowledge of STEM disciplines, developing key skills and building a support network. The mentorship program hones communication and teamwork skills, exposes students to the reality of everyday life as a female in STEM and creates opportuities to connect. The overall objective is to generate a strong sense of belonging and STEM identity, addressing the issues of participation, retention and representation of women in Astronomy and STEM. PROVOCA trains its own female STEM mentors, 50% of which come from Astronomy and related engineering fields. In a thorough 8-month experience, volunteers prepare to accompany and guide high school and early college students. During this talk, we will discuss lessons learned in the 5 years since the initiative started, show how mentors and students benefit from the program and how PROVOCA helps solidify STEM identity and creates network for resilience." |
