"Since 2018, the Chilean Astronomical Society (Sociedad Chilena de Astronomía - SOCHIAS) spearheaded initiatives aimed at including the deaf local communities in astronomical outreach activities (Breaking the Silence, Breaking the Barriers). Even if modest, the impact of these initiatives is still evident and serving as inspiration for other countries to consider a more systematic inclusion of their local sign language in STEM outreach activities. In this talk we will discuss different strategies for including sign language interpretation in astronomical outreach activities, tips and lessons learned on how to prepare to welcome those whose primary language is sign language in astronomy related activities." |
