How to be more inclusive from a language perspective
Language is a powerful tool for shaping our perceptions and interactions, influencing how we create spaces of inclusion or exclusion. Drawing on my experiences as an educator in higher education and researcher in sociolinguistics and inclusion, this talk explores actionable strategies to promote equity through conscious language practices, informed by the works of Deborah Cameron on verbal hygiene and Judith Butler’s theories of performativity. By addressing biases, embracing gender-neutral expressions, and acknowledging cultural diversity we can create spaces where all identities feel seen and respected. I will highlight how mindful communication fosters connection, belonging, and transformative change.
