ALMA Community Days: Cycle 3 Proposal Preparation

ESO Garching, 13-15 April 2015

ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array, is expected to be the leading observatory at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths for decades to come. Since the start of Early Science observations in September 2011, the array has yielded data of unprecedented quality leading to spectacular scientific results. In parallel, the observatory is continuing work on the extension and optimisation of capabilities. The main new scientific capability offered in the upcoming ALMA Cycle 3 will be significantly longer baselines than in previous cycles. A call for Cycle 3 observing proposals will be released in March 2015.

The ESO ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) will organise Community Days at the ESO Headquarters in order to optimally prepare the European astronomical community for Cycle 3. The Community Days will focus on the practical aspects of proposal preparation and include a series of presentations related to ALMA and Cycle 3, as well as hands-on tutorials for the ALMA Observing Tool and the Simulators. These should enable novice and advanced users alike to create observing projects making full use of ALMA's scientific capabilities in Cycle 3.

The Cycle 3 ALMA Community Days will take place immediately preceding the ALMA/Herschel Archival Workshop 2015, meaning that interested participants can easily attend both meetings.
