Social Activities

We plan to organise several social events throughout the week including:

  • Sunday 7th April: Cocktail reception in the grounds of the ESO offices in Vitacura.

  • Wednesday 10th April: Afternoon tour of a local vineyard (cost roughly 30€ depending on numbers).

Following lunch, we will take advantage of the free afternoon by visiting a local vineyard, where we will tour the grounds and sample some of the local wine.  This activity is not included in the conference fee, and so interest should be indicated either at the time of registration or before the final deadline for registration (February 28th) by sending an email to dslg2013@eso.org.  The cost will be announced once attendance is known and then the fee will be collected at registration.

  • Thursday 11th April: Conference dinner at La Vaquita Echá.

A three-course traditional chilean meal (with vegetarian and seafood options) plus welcome cocktail and coffee at La Vaquita Echá restaurant in the Santiago commune of Pirque (just over an hour outside of Santiago).  Pirque is home to some of the areas finest vineyards and some stunning scenery, all of which will be supplemented by the traditional atmosphere of the restaurant.  Traditional Chilean entertainment is foreseen.  This event is included in the conference fee, so not to be missed! Additional guests: 45€

  • Friday 12th April: City tour ending in Bellavista (cost roughly 15€, depending on numbers and not including funicular ride).

Following lunch, we will take a bus tour of Santiago.  We will visit the main sites of interest in this historic city, including Santiago's central square (Plaza de Armas) and the presidential palace La Moneda (from which Salvador Allende gave his famous speech during the military coup of 1973).  The tour will end in the bohemian district of Bellavista, affording attendees an opportunity to ride the famous funicular to the peak of Cerro San Cristobal (at 280 m, it is the second highest point in the city) before sampling some of the areas famous nightlife (for those less adventurous amongst us the bus will return directly to the ESO offices in Vitacura).
Just as for the wine tour, this activity is not included in the conference fee, and so interest should be indicated either at the time of registration or before the final deadline for registration (February 28th) by sending an email to dslg2013@eso.org.  The cost will be announced once attendance is known and then the fee will be collected at registration.
