ALMA Long Baseline Workshop (2nd announcement)

The Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is now the most powerful mm/submm interferometer in the world, and it is producing a total of > 500 refereed papers in nearly all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. In particular, the ~0.02” submm images obtained during the long baseline campaign in 2014 (ALMA Partnership et al. 2015) have led to numerous publication and followup observational and theoretical studies, signifying the extreme importance of the high resolution imaging capabilities of ALMA. 

The 7-m Array Supplemental Call for Proposals is now closed. One hundred ninety-eight valid proposals requesting a total of 4815 hours were received, for an over-subscription rate of ~ 6. For comparison, for the Cycle 5 Call, 62 proposals were received for the standalone ACA. Overall, the ACA was oversubscribed in Cycle 5 by a factor of ~ 4.

The report on the ALMA Cycle 5 proposal submission statistics is now available. It provides a summary of items such as the number of submitted proposals and time requested, subscription rates, and comparisons with the number of hours requested in previous Cycles.

The deadline for ALMA PIs to submit their Phase 2 material for the approved projects has been set to 7 September 2017. Users can delegate the submission of the Phase 2 material in case of unavailability. Guidelines to PIs will be made public in July.

Two enthusiastic Operational Support Scientists are required to join Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA)  and The University of Manchester to further develop and support the work of our world leading facilities at Jodrell Bank Observatory and across the eMerlin/VLBI National Facility. With responsibility for designing, developing and maintaining software systems for the control and monitoring of all the radio telescopes operated by JBCA and the development of astronomical data analysis software together with interfacing to hardware.

From 16 - 20 October 2017 ASTRON (the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy) and JIVE  (Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC) will host the European Radio Interferometry School, ERIS 2017. This school is the seventh of a series of summer schools supported by RadioNet. ERIS will provide a week of lectures and tutorials on how to achieve scientific results from radio interferometry.

The Call for Proposals for ALMA Cycle 5 (October 2017 – September 2018) closed on 20 April 2017. Over 1700 proposals were received, the largest number of proposals so far. Included were also 24 proposals for Large Programmes, 16 proposals for VLBI observations, 41 proposals for solar observations, and 23 Target of Opportunity proposals.

7-m Array Supplemental Call for Cycle 4 is NOW OPEN!

The Joint ALMA Observatory (JAO) is now accepting observing proposals that request to use the 7-m Array in stand-alone mode for the remainder of Cycle 4. Instructions on how to submit proposals can be found on the 7-m Array Supplemental Call web page.
