Travelling to Garching

Garching lies about 13 km north-east of Munich and 17 km south-westof Munich international airport  (Franz Josef Strauss). Please follow these instructions to travel to Garching.

Instructions for travelling to the workshop venue

We advise all participants to travel to the workshop venue withthe underground train (U-Bahn), line U6. The U-Bahn stationin Garching is centrally located and within close reach of all hotelsand is indicated with a large blue "U"-sign. Take the underground train(U-Bahn) line U6, with destination "Garching Forschungszentrum" (Garching Research Campus) - this is the last stop on the line. Exit the station at the rear end of the train and follow the sign for ESO (see map). Here is some more information on the use of public transport. Timetables can be found here.

Registration

Registration will take place on Monday, October 15th in front of the new auditorium (Eridanus) form 12:30.

Presentations

We will have available in the meeting room a Windows laptop and a Mac laptop with standard presentation software. Please bring your presentation on a memory stick (pdf preferred) and give it to one of the ESO persons wearing a yellow badge well before the session in which you talk. Using your own laptop is strongly discouraged.

Poster Papers

The poster papers will be on display at the ESO Headquarters from Monday afternoon for whole the duration of the workshop. The display area available per poster is limited to 60 cm (w) x 100 cm (h). Hence the accepted poster size is A1 (59.4 cm x 84.1 cm).  Information on the exact location of the posters will be given at registration.

Internet and email

Open wireless internet is available in most parts of the ESO building.  

Social Events

• WELCOME RECEPTION - Day 1

  In the ESO Supernova building on Monday after the last session at 18:00. 

• WORKSHOP DINNER - Day 4 - Thursday night

  At the Gasthof Neuwirt, Münchner Str. 10, 85748 Garching. All workshop participants will be invited to join, without additional charge. There will likely be a fee for accompanying persons, which the LOC will inform you of closer to the time.

Lunch

Lunches will be provided on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next to the workshop room.

Bank service

There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code), but sometimes cash is needed in some shops or restaurants. Please note that the banks may close during lunch time and have otherwise opening hours grossly different from shops.

Weather

Munich weather in October tends to be cold and wet. So you should come prepared for this. Daytime temperatures are anywhere between 0 to 10 C. For more information, see Weather Online.
