Workshop venue

The workshop will be held at ESO in the old Council Room (room Fornax), Karl-Schwarzschild-Str. 2, Garching b. München. Please walk through the ESO main entrance and follow the signs to the workshop area.

How to reach ESO

The workshop venue can easily be reached with the underground train / metro (U-Bahn) line U6. The underground / metro station in Garching is centrally located, within close reach of all hotels and indicated with a large white "U" on a blue background.

Take the U6, with destination "Garching Forschungszentrum" (Garching Research Campus) - this is the last stop on the line. Exit the station at the rear end of the train, go up the stairs towards the street and straight on for about 500 metres. On your left hand side you will find ESO with the gradual gangway leading to the main reception desk after entering ESO premises.

For participants who stay in Garching it is cheaper to buy a ticket with 10 strips called "Streifenkarte" and to stamp one strip per journey before entering the train or after entering a bus. One "Streifenkarte" costs 13 EUR. It can be used for 10 rides within Garching. You can purchase these tickets at any Ticketing Machine (Fahrkartenautomat) at the airport, inside the metro / train stations or from bus drivers, if you use a bus (numbers 292 or 230).

For those who stay in Munich City Centre it is advisable to buy a ticket for one week, valid for rings 1 - 7. This ticket costs 32.70 EUR and allows you to make as many journeys as you wish during one week within the 7 rings.

Taxi

Taxis can be ordered 1 hour before departing from ESO. There will also be a sign-up sheet for those who need a taxi at the end of the workshop. This list will be made available at the workshop reception desk until Wednesday, 21 September 2016, 12:00. The list will then be handed over to the receptionists who will group participants and arrange for taxis according to preferred departure times. You will find a sheet with all scheduled taxi rides at the ESO reception desk on the last day of the workshop.

Registration

Registration for the school will take place on Monday, 6 March 2017, between 13:00 and 14:00 in front of the ESO Auditorium Telescopium.

Registration for the VLTI Community Days will take place on Wednesdsay, 8 March, between 13:00 and 14:00 in front of the ESO Auditorium Telescopium.

Registration Fee

There is no registration fee.

Presentations

There will be a Windows laptop with standard presentation software in the meeting room. Please bring your presentation on a memory stick (pdf preferred) and give it to one of the ESO persons well before the session in which you talk. Using your own laptop is strongly discouraged.

Internet and email

Open wireless internet is available in most parts of the ESO building. Signs with the respective account name and password will be placed in the room as well as in the workshop area (Auditorium Telescopium).

Social Events

BIER & BREZ'N" - Wednesday, 8 March

Beer and brez'n" will be served in front of the old Auditorium (Telescopium) after the last session.

Lunch

You can have lunch at the canteen of the Max-Planck Institute, located about 5 minutes walk from the workshop room. (See map of the campus. The canteen is marked C2.) The opening hours are:Dining hall: Mo.-Th. 11:15 - 13:45; Fr. 11:15 - 13:30. Cafeteria: Mo.-Th. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 - 16:30; Fr. 8:30 - 11:00 and 11:30 -14:00. Only cash is accepted. Prices for a main course range from about 4 to 6 Euros.

Bank service

There are banks and cash-points in Garching. All main credit and debit cards are accepted (with PIN code). Please note that the banks may close during lunch time and have otherwise opening hours grossly different from shops.

Weather

Munich weather in Marsch can be nice but should tend to be cool on the workshop days. So you should come prepared for this. Daytime temperatures are anywhere between 0 and 10 C. For more information, see Weather Online.
