Argento e blu a Paranal
Quello che potrebbe essere un bellissimo giorno chiaro dovunque nel mondo, è in realtà un giorno insolitamente nuvoloso all’Osservatorio dell’ESO a Paranal, nel deserto di Atacama. Poichè si tratta di uno dei posti più secchi della Terra, è molto insolito vedere nuvole in cielo. Molti astronomi ed ingegneri che passano del tempo sul sito trovano che il cielo senza nuvole sia una delle cose che più li colpisce del lavoro nel deserto di Atacama. Questa splendida foto panoramica a 360 gradi, fatta dal consulente ESO Dirk Essl con 15 esposizioni separate, ha catturato uno dei rari giorni nuvolosi a Paranal. Si possono vedere alcuni minuscoli, radi cirri sulle strutture del Very Large Telescope. Queste nuvole si formano a grandi altitudini e sono fatte di minuscoli cristalli di ghiaccio.
L’Osservatorio di Paranal riceve meno di 10 millimetri di pioggia all’anno: una delle ragioni per cui questa montagna a 2600 metri di altitudine è stata scelta come sito del Very Large Telescope (VLT) dell’ESO. Questo panorama include le quattro unità telescopiche del VLT e i quattro piccoli Telescopi Ausiliari nelle loro strutture arrotondate, uno sul davanti e gli altri tre più sullo sfondo. I sentieri sul terreno sono stati creati per poter spostare i telescopi in posizioni diverse.
