Fri sikt in i en klassisk spiralgalax

ESO släpper en vacker bild av den näraliggande galaxen Messier 83 som visar upp galaxen som den ser ut i infrarött ljus. Bilden har tagits med kameran HAWK-I som är monterad på ESO:s jätteteleskop VLT (Very Large Telescope) vid Paranalobservatoriet i Chile. Den kraftfulla kameran har lyckats skapa en av de skarpaste och mest detaljerade bilder som någonsin tagits på Messier 83 från jordytan.

Galaxen Messier 83 eller M 83 (eso0825) ligger cirka 15 miljoner ljusår bort i Vattenormens stjärnbild. Den sträcker sig bara över 40 000 ljusår, vilket endast motsvarar 40 procent av Vintergatans storlek, men på många sätt liknar galaxen vår egen. Både spiralformen och den stjärnfyllda staven i mitten påminner om Vintergatans. Bland astronomer är Messier 83 också känd för sina supernovor, gigantiska explosioner som markerar livets slut för vissa typer av stjärnor. Under de senaste hundra åren har hela sex supernovor observerats i Messier 83, ett rekord som den bara delar med en annan galax. Även mellan sina supernovautbrott är Messier 83 en av de mest ljusstarka bland våra närmaste galaxgrannar och lyser tillräckligt starkt för att kunna ses med en fältkikare.

Messier 83 observerades i infrarött ljus med den kraftfulla kameran HAWK-I [1], vid ESO:s VLT (Very Large Telescope). Det stoft och damm som annars skymmer mycket av galaxen blir genomskinligt när man studerar den i infrarött ljus. Gasmolnen som lyses upp av heta unga stjärnor i spiralarmarna är också mindre framträdande i infrarödbilder som den här. Resultatet blir att galaxens enorma stjärnsvärmar framträder tydligare. Den fria sikten genom galaxen är viktig för astronomer som letar efter hopar av unga stjärnor, i synnerhet de som ligger gömda i galaxens stoftrika delar. Det var med syfte att studera just dessa hopar som de aktuella observationerna gjordes [2]. HAWK-I:s skarpa syn avslöjar långt fler stjärnor, djupt inne i galaxen, än vad som kunnat ses i tidigare bilder.

Den oslagbara kombination av VLT:s gigantiska spegel, dess stora bildfält, kamerans extrema känslighet och de superba observationsförhållanden vid ESO:s Paranalobservatorium gör HAWK-I till en av världens mest kraftfulla kameror för kortvågigt infrarött ljus. Astronomer står i kö för att få en chans att använda kameran -- som finns i drift sedan 2007 (eso0736) — ivriga att kunna få tag i de bästa bilder av den infraröda natthimlen som går att få från marken.
