Flere og flere satellitter i kredsløb

Der er adskillige initiativer Verden rundt, som udvikler grupper af satellitter, som skal opsendes til forholdsvis lave baner om Jorden med et formål at skaffe kommunikationsmuligheder, fortrinsvis til fordel for områder, som har dårlige muligheder hidtil. Den megen omtale i medierne for nyligt har focuseret på den mulige påvirkning for astronomien fra disse satellitgrupper, som med tiden kan løbe op i titusinder af individuelle satellitter.
ESOs 16 medlemstater tillige med andre stater og organisationer over hele Kloden foretager anseelige investeringer i opbygning og drift af jordbaserede anlæg, som skal udføre grundvidenskabeligt arbejde med det formål at fremme menneskehedens samlede viden. De uforstyrrede observationsforhold, som er nødvendige for, at disse anlæg kan fungere bedst muligt, kan blive truet af klare satellitter, som passerer hen igennem teleskopernes synsfelt. ESO og andre observatorier overvejer observationsstrategier, som kan mindske virkningen på astronomiske observationer fra disse satellitgrupper.
ESO støtter de udtalelser, som er kommet fra den Internationale Astronomiske Union og andre organisationer, hvor der opfordres til samråd med eksperter fra astronomiens verden allerede når der designes den slags satellitkonstellationer til opsendelse til lav bane om Jorden, når der er risisko for, at de kommer til at forstyrre astronomiske observationer. ESO har diskuteret sagen med vores ledende Council, og vi er parat til at samarbejde med relevante nationale og internationale organisationer, for at studere problemet og mindske skadevirkningerne. ESO støtter udviklingen af regulerende bestemmelser, som i den sidste ende kan sikre et harmonisk samvær af meget lovende teknologiske fremskridt i lav bane om Jorden med de forhold, som gør det muligt for menneskeheden fortsat at kunne observere og forstå Universet.
