Prezident Václav Klaus na návštěvě observatoře ESO Paranal

Dne 6. dubna 2011 přivítala observatoř ESO Paranal vzácnou návštěvu – prezidenta České republiky Václava Klause a jeho choť Livii Klausovou. Prezidentský pár si nenechal ujít ani příležitost k prohlídce Cerro Armazones, místa vybraného pro stavbu budoucího obřího dalekohledu E-ELT.
Prezident si na Cerro Paranal se zájmem prohlédl technické zázemí observatoře a před začátkem nočních pozorování se zúčastnil otevření dómu (kopule) jednoho z osmimetrových hlavních dalekohledů VLT, který patří k technologicky nejvyspělejším pozemním dalekohledům světa.
“Jsem velmi potěšen, že mohu na observatoři ESO Paranal přivítat prezidenta Václava Klause a představit mu jedno z předních světových astronomických zařízení, které ESO navrhla, postavila a provozuje pro evropskou astronomii,“ řekl generální ředitel ESO Tim de Zeeuw.
Na to prezident Klaus odpověděl: „Jsem ohromen touto úžasnou technologií, kterou ESO provozuje zde, v srdci pouště. Čeští astronomové již dnes toto vybavení úspěšně využívají a spolu s nimi se těšíme, že český průmysl a celá vědecká komunita bude moci přispět také k přípravě projektu E-ELT.”
Z plošiny, na které je umístěn komplex dalekohledů VLT, mohl prezident obdivovat výhledy na úžasná zákoutí chilské pouště Atacama, která obklopuje Paranal včetně Cerro Armazones, jež bylo zvoleno jako místo pro budoucí obří teleskop E-ELT (viz eso1018). V současnosti ESO čeká, až její nejvyšší řídící orgány koncem roku 2011 schválí tento ambiciózní projekt a umožní stavbu dalekohledu v ceně 1 miliardy Euro. Zahájení stavby je očekáváno v roce 2012 a první pozorování by se měla uskutečnit počátkem příštího desetiletí.
Prezidenta Klause pří návštěvě Paranalu doprovázeli také ministr zahraničí České republiky Karel Schwarzenberg, velvyslanec ČR v Chile Zdeněk Kubánek a zástupci vlády i průmyslu. Delegaci na Paranalu přivítali generální ředitel ESO Tim de Zeeuw, zástupce ESO v Chile Massimo Tarenghi, výkonný ředitel Andreas Kaufer, a také Jan Palouš, zástupce ČR v ESO Council, řídícím orgánu ESO.
Po zahájení činnosti dalekohledu měl prezident Klaus možnost obdivovat z plošiny VLT nezapomenutelný západ Slunce nad Tichým oceánem. Poté navštívil kontrolní místnost, odkud jsou řízeny všechny čtyři hlavní teleskopy VLT a interferometr VLTI. Zde se také zúčastnil zahájení pozorování na jednom z dalekohledů.

ESO (Evropská jižní observatoř) je hlavní mezinárodní astronomickou organizací Evropy a patří k nejproduktivnějším astronomickým observatořím světa. Je podporována 15 členskými státy, kterými jsou: Belgie, Brazílie, Česká republika, Dánsko, Finsko, Francie, Itálie, Německo, Nizozemí, Portugalsko, Rakousko, Španělsko, Švédsko, Švýcarsko a Velká Británie. ESO má za cíl vývoj, konstrukci a provoz výkonných pozemních astronomických zařízení, která umožní významné vědecké objevy. ESO také hraje přední roli při propagaci a organizaci mezinárodní spolupráce na poli astronomického výzkumu. ESO v současnosti provozuje tři observatoře světově úrovně: La Silla, Paranal a Chajnantor, které se nacházejí na poušti Atacama v Chile. Na Paranalu se nachází VLT (Very Large Telescope = Velmi velký dalekohled) – nejvyspělejší pozemní dalekohled pracující ve viditelném světle a VISTA, největší přehlídkový dalekohled pro infračervenou oblast na světě. Zároveň je ESO evropským zástupcem největšího astronomického projektu všech dob – teleskopu ALMA budovaného na planině Chajnantor. V současnosti ESO plánuje výstavbu Evropského extrémně velkého dalekohledu (E-ELT), který bude mít průměr primárního zrcadla 42 metrů. Měl by pracovat v infračerveném i viditelném oboru záření a stane se největším dalekohledem světa.
