Estallidos de formación estelar y estrellas a fuego lento
Esta es una de las 74 galaxias cercanas cuyos viveros estelares han sido recientemente observados por ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) en un censo astronómico llamado PHANGS (Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS, física a gran resolución angular en galaxias cercanas). Hasta ahora, se han obtenido imágenes de unas 100000 de estas guarderías estelares, utilizando más de 750 horas de observación. La extraordinaria sensibilidad de ALMA proporciona datos con una resolución lo suficientemente alta como para poder estudiar en detalle estas regiones, mostrando que algunas están cuajadas de nuevas estrellas mientras que otras evolucionan de forma más gradual.
Esta esperada diversidad en el proceso de cómo se forman las estrellas es la motivación que hay tras este enorme esfuerzo. Durante mucho tiempo ha habido teorías que pretendían explicar cómo y por qué tienen lugar estas diferencias, algunas relacionadas con las características de la propia galaxia anfitriona —propiedades como tamaño, edad y dinámica interna—, pero la falta de datos de alta resolución había sido un obstáculo para probarlas.
La gran cantidad y variedad de los datos cedidos por PHANGS ya están ayudando a los astrónomos a comprender más, a pesar de que es sólo una tercera parte del censo. El proyecto pretende observar un total de unos 300000 viveros estelares y, una vez completo, debería impulsar significativamente nuestra comprensión de cómo influyen las propiedades de la galaxia en la manera en que se forman nuevas estrellas.
