1. Introduction
In the framework of the NTT Calibration Plan, The NTT Team has prepared a list of OBs to be used to calibrate all the "standard observing modes". This document describes these OBs and how to use them.
1.1 Standard Observing Modes
The NTT instruments allow observations to be performed in an infinity of different modes; it is unfortunately impossible to give standard calibrations for all of them. A set of commonly used observation modes ("Standard Modes") have been identified, and OBs have been written to fully calibrate them. A larger set ("Extended Modes") have an incomplete set of OBs. In the list below, the Standard Mode Calibrations are identified by a name starting with CalPlan.
The calibration OBs include night time calibration, e.g. photometric field and spectrophotometric star observations, and ancillary, or day time calibration, like biases, flatfields, HeAr...
While preparing an observing program, the observer can either use the standard OBs directly, if his program is compatible with the standard or extended observing modes, or modify them to his taste.
1.2 Available OBs
- EMMI:
- Bias and Darks
- Imaging Flat Fields
- Spectroscopic Flat Fields for Standard and Extended Modes
- Spectroscopic wavelength calibrations, for Std and Ext Modes
- observations of Photometric Standards
- observations of Spectrophotometric Standards
- SuSI2:
- Bias and Darks
- Flat Fields
- SofI: not yet available
1.2 Procedure to use the Std Calibration OBs
In addition to the calibrations that the observer performs himself, the observer can request up to 2h of day-time calibrations that will be performed for him by the NTT staff. To request these day-time calibrations, the observer should fill out the "Day-Time Calibration Request Form" available at the control room.
The Standard Mode Calibrations are requested by checking boxes on the form (in the list below, the Standard Mode OBs are identified by their name starting with CalPlan). Additional OBs, either of an extended mode or prepared by the observer, can be requested by filling a list of OBs on the form.
To use the Calibration OBs yourself (e.g. photometric standard), proceed as following from P2PP:
- open the Import/Export Menu: Observation Block -> Import/Export -> Import
- in the Import window, select the schedule/p2pp-impex-StdCal directory (click and [Filter])
- select the relevant sub-directory (click and [Filter] )
- select the OB(s) you want to use, and [Import]
- [Dismiss] the import log window
use the OBs as any other OBs; in BOB, you will have to select relevant templates (e.g. for the spectrophotometric standard OBs, select only the template with the relevant Grism).
Notes:
- If you select some Standard Mode or Extended Mode OBs for day calibrations by checking the form, be sure that the ones in your P2PP window are not modified, as they may either not be used or overwritten. If you modify a Standard Mode OB, rename it, and write their new name on the Day Time Calibrations Request Form.
- If you find out that one of the OB does not work properly, pls report it to the NTT Team.
- Be sure to use the genuine Standard/Ext OBs, that are found in ~/p2pp-impex-StdCal, not those that you could find in other directories.
2. Description of the OBs
2.1 Night-Time OBs
A set of OBs for photometric star and spectrophotometric field observations has been defined, and is described in the following documents:
- A list of Observation Blocks for Photometric Standard Stars, to be used with EMMI, by Fernando Comeron,
- A list of Observation Blocks for Spectrophotometric Standard Stars, to be used with EMMI, by Fernando Comeron,
