La Nova sopra la Supernova
In una coincidenza astronomica improbabile, una stella esplode come una nova nel cielo sopra il nuovo planetario e centro visitatori meno di una settimana dopo la sua inaugurazione. Un’immagine della nova nana V392 Persei è stata ripresa dall’ambasciatore fotografo di ESO Petr Horálek il 2 Maggio 2018. Essa mostra una vista a grandangolo del cielo della serata sopra la supernova di ESO, in direzione ovest-nordovest.
La posizione della nova sopra la Supernova di ESO è indicata con un inserto che mostra una vista ingrandita della zona ripresa con la stessa macchina fotografica, ma con una lente diversa. In quest’immagine la nova è facilmente identificabile a causa del suo colore arancione.
Le Novae nane accadono come risultato dell’accrescimento di materiale dal loro compagno binario di massa più piccola. Il materiale proveniente dal disco è compresso mentre viene trasferito verso la superficie della nana bianca dove è riscaldato e accende un’esplosione molto potente e brillante. Il caso di nova V392 Persei è infatti un evento molto più raro e più brillante. C’è stato solo un altro caso nella storia delle osservazioni di novae, dove una stella ha seguito la transizione verso una nova a pieno titolo e molto più brillante. È stato il caso di V1213 Centauri nel 2009 e ora abbiamo il secondo caso, V392 Persei.
Quest’immagine è simbolica perché l’edificio della supernova è stato concepito per assomigliare ad una stella doppia, molto simile al sistema di nova nana di V392 Persei, che alla fine porterà alla brillante esplosione di una delle due stelle come supernova - da cui il nome del centro.
