Firmato il contratto per la progettazione finale e la costruzione dell’unità adattiva per lo specchio più grande del mondo

ESO ha firmato un contratto con il consorzio italiano AdOptica - ADS International e Microgate, associato con INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) e altri appaltatori - per la progettazione finale e la costruzione dell’unità adattiva per il quarto specchio (M4) dello European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Questo sistema di specchi supererà tutti gli specchi adattivi mai costruiti per un telescopio e sarà il più grande di questo tipo.
Il contratto è stato firmato dai rappresentanti di AdOptica ed ESO durante una cerimonia al quartier generale di ESO il 19 Giugno 2015.
Il contratto di AdOptica non comprende la produzione della struttura degli specchi. Questa verrà costruita con un contratto separato che verrà annunciato presto.
Lo specchio deformabile M4 di 2,4 metri rappresenta una parte fondamentale di E-ELT. Esso consiste in uno specchio composto da sei componenti a petali, attuatori e sistemi di controllo che possono correggere in tempo reale le distorsioni dell’immagine causate dalla turbolenza dell’atmosfera terrestre e anche le deformazioni della struttura del telescopio principale causate dal vento. Il sistema ottico corretto renderà le immagini ottenute al telescopio nitide quasi come quelle prese dallo spazio [1].
La costruzione di un sistema di specchi come questo non è mai stata tentata prima e gli studi cominciarono nel 2008 con due contratti competitivi per una progettazione preliminare di E-ELT. Nel 2012, il progetto di AdOptica fu selezionato tra i due. Dal 2012, AdOptica ha sviluppato il progetto preliminare per l’unità. Il progetto si è evoluto significativamente per soddisfare i requisiti di stabilità. La revisione del progetto preliminare è stata superata con successo nell’Aprile 2015 e la compagnia ha illustrato il progetto con un prototipo dimostrativo di uno specchio di un metro che soddisfa i requisiti dell'ESO.
Il nuovo contratto sarà per il progetto finale e la produzione dell’unità M4. La pianificazione prevede che il progetto finale sia completato entro la metà del 2017, poi l’unità sarà costruita e testata in Europa in base alle prestazioni richieste prima di essere spedita in Cile per la fine del 2022.

[1] La forma dello specchio viene controllata da circa 5700 attuatori. Un dispositivo a sei gambe (hexapod) ne consente l’inclinazione e ampi movimenti laterali.
