The spread of ALMA
The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is situated more than 5000 metres above sea level in the Chilean desert, on the Chajnantor plateau. Here, the dry air and thin atmosphere allow a spectacular view into the Universe and make it the perfect place for such a sensitive telescope. Just one (and another much further away) of the telescope's 66 antennas is pictured here, dwarfed by the stunning landscape for miles around.
