Caught up in the clouds

Sky phenomena are not reserved for the night alone. Despite its deceptive appearance, this light show is not a rainbow, but something more unusual. Here a relatively rare instance of a circumhorizontal arc, caused by particular refraction of light, casts vivid colours in the clouds over one of the ESO observatory sites in Chile.
