Paranal red sprites

Captured by ESO Photo Ambassador Petr Horálek from ESO's Paranal Observatory, located in northern Chile, the Milky Way is seen to sink below the distant horizon. At the very centre of the image, the ghostly tendrils of a red sprite — a ghostly phenomenon that occur at high altitudes above thunderstorms — appear to reach for the star-studded night sky.
