The ELT's dome and windscreen in action

This video shows an artistic rendering of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction in Chile's Atacama Desert. It shows the dome opening to allow observations of the night sky, and the windscreen moving up to protect the telescope's mirrors from direct wind exposure and to control the airflow within the dome. The windscreen design is based on four curved plate segments that can be moved up and down depending on the inclination of the telescope.
