Mounted image 154: The Eagle Nebula in infrared light

The Eagle Nebula, also known as Messier 16, imaged by the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) in infrared light. The star-forming region known as the "Pillars of Creation" can be seen in the centre. The vast pillars of cosmic dust and gas are mostly opaque in visible light, but the VLT's infrared observations allow us to peer deeper inside at the newly born stars within.
