Assinado contrato para o design final e construção do maior espelho adaptativo do mundo

O ESO assinou um contrato com o consórcio AdOptica em Itália — ADS International e Microgate, em parceria com o INAF (Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica) como subcontratante — para o design final e construção de uma unidade adaptativa para o quarto espelho (M4) do European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Este sistema de espelhos será melhor que qualquer espelho adaptativo alguma vez construído para um telescópio e será também o maior do seu género.
O contrato foi assinado por representantes da AdOptica e do ESO numa cerimónia que teve lugar na Sede do ESO a 19 de junho de 2015.
O contrato AdOptica não inclui o fabrico dos espelhos propriamente ditos, que serão construídos ao abrigo de um contrato separado a ser anunciado brevemente.
O M4, o sistema de espelho deformável de 2,4 metros, é uma parte fundamental do E-ELT, consistindo num espelho composto por seis pétalas de metal, atuadores e sistemas de controlo que podem corrigir em tempo real a distorção da imagem causada pela turbulência atmosférica, assim como corrigir os efeitos das deformações da estrutura do espelho principal causadas pelo vento. O sistema óptico corrigido fará com que as imagens obtidas pelo telescópio sejam quase tão nítidas como as obtidas no espaço [1].
A construção de um sistema de espelhos como este nunca foi executada antes e os estudos começaram em 2008 com dois contratos competitivos para o design preliminar do E-ELT. Em 2012, a AdOptica foi selecionada entre os dois designs competitivos e seguidamente desenvolveu o design preliminar da unidade. O design evoluiu significativamente até atingir os requisitos de estabilidade necessários. A revisão deste design foi feita em abril de 2015, tendo a companhia demonstrada a eficácia do design com um espelho protótipo de um metro que cumpre os requisitos de desempenho pedidos pelo ESO.
O novo contrato assinado destina-se à execução do design final e construção da unidade M4. Os planos de construção do E-ELT apontam para que o design final esteja completo em meados de 2017, para que seguidamente a unidade seja construída e testada na Europa — verificando-se se cumpre todos os requisitos de desempenho — e enviada para o Chile até ao final de 2022.

[1] A forma do espelho é controlada por cerca de 5700 atuadores. Um hexapode permite executar movimentos de inclinação e levantamento assim como movimentos laterais grandes.
