FAST2002 Frontline Astrophysics for School Teachers an ESO teacher training course

Why and what?

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is world-wide known for its frontline research and teachnology standard. As the students of today will become the scientists of tomorrow, it is very important that frontline research has part in school lessons.

The training course consists of lectures and workshops:

In the lectures, scientists will give talks about the newest developments in technology and science. All the presentations will be in English and on a level understandable for non-scientists. The participants will get proceedings containing all the necessary information.

In the workshops, the participants will work with existing teaching material as well as creating new material with ESO data.

When?

FAST2002 will take place from August 20 to August 24, 2002 at ESO Headquarters in Garching near Munich, Germany.

Who and how?

Teachers from all European countries can apply for this training course. The selection of participants will be done by ESO and national authorities. The basis for the selection is the curriculum vitae you have to provide in the application form.

If you want to participate, you should have experience in teaching Astronomy. You should present a poster about your projects.

Furthermore you should be willing to promote ESO's science and technology among teachers in your country, e.g. by giving talks in national training courses or by writing articles for local teachers' journals.

For a reduced number of participants ESO will take care of travel and/or subsistance.

The deadline for application to participate has passed on June 1, 2002. All applicants have been informed directly about the outcome.
