Rozgwieżdżona noc nad La Silla
Przeraźliwie jasna zasłona z gwiazd jest tłem tego pięknego zdjęcia, wykonanego przez astronoma Håkona Dahlego. Sylwetką na pierwszym planie jest sam Håkon, otoczony przez kilka wielkich, ciemnych kopuł "zaśmiecających" górę w Obserwatorium ESO La Silla.
Wielu zawodowych astronomów jest także miłośnikami fotografii - któż mógłby ich za to winić? Obserwatoria ESO na pustyni Atakama należą do najlepszych miejsc na Ziemi do obserwacji gwiazd, a z tego samego powodu są niesamowitymi miejscami do fotografowania nocnego nieba.
Håkon wykonał zdjęcia podczas trwającej tydzień sesji obserwacyjnej na 2,2-metrowym teleskopie MPG/ESO. Podczas jego pobytu teleskop został chwilowo przekazany innemu zespołowi obserwacyjnemu, co dało Håkonowi szansę podziwiania rozgwieżdżonej nocy, a także uwiecznienia jej dla nas.
Droga Mleczna jest jaśniejsza na niebie półkuli południowej niż północnej, z powodu sposobu w jaki południowe obszary naszej planety kierują się w stronę gęstego centrum galaktycznego. Ale nawet na południu Droga Mleczna na nocnym niebie jest całkiem słaba. Dla większości z nas zanieczyszczenie świetlne z miast, a nawet Księżyc, mogą przyćmić jej słaby blask, ukrywając galaktykę z naszego widoku.
Jednym z najlepszych aspektów Obserwatorium La Silla jest jego daleka odległość od jasnych świateł miast, co umożliwia jeden z najciemniejszych widoków nocnego nieba na Ziemi. Atmosfera także jest bardzo przezroczysta, nie ma mgieł przesłaniających widok. Niebo nad Las Silla jest tak ciemne, że można dostrzec cień rzucany przez światło Drogi Mlecznej.
Håkon wysłał zdjęcie do grupy Flickr Your ESO Pictures. Grupa ta jest regularnie sprawdzana, a najlepsze fotografie wybieramy do popularnej serii "Zdjęcie tygodnia" albo do galerii.
