Spectrum of quasar at Z=5.00
This chart shows the spectrum of "Quasar 1", one of the most distant objects known in the Universe. Quasar 1" has a redshift of no less than 5.0. It was discovered by X. Fan et al. within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Collaboration and is one of the most distant objects known at present. Its light was emitted when the age of the Universe was only a few percent of its present value. When studied in detail, this high-quality FORS spectrum will provide accurate information on the chemical composition of the gas in these remote objects. The spectrum was obtained in the long-slit spectroscopy mode of FORS1. The total exposure time was 60 minutes.
