Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is pictured here above the entrance to the Residencia, the hotel where staff and astronomers working at ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) stay. With a library, fitness centre and large indoor garden, the Residencia offers a relaxing oasis amid the harsh desert surroundings for its inhabitants, who often have to work long hours. This view of the sky exhibits the excellent viewing conditions available in the Chilean Atacama Desert, where ESO's world-class telescopes are located to study the Universe.
