German Research Foundation selects the ORIGINS Cluster as a new Cluster of Excellence

27 september 2018

Today, on 27 September 2018, the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft — DFG) announced the selection of 57 new clusters of excellence, including the cluster ORIGINS — From the origins of the Universe to the first building blocks of life, of which ESO is a partner institution. Starting on 1 January 2019, the competitively selected collaborative initiatives between German universities and scientific institutions will share funding in the amount of 385 million euros per year for an initial period of seven years.

The ORIGINS Cluster will explore the creation of the Universe, one of the most intriguing topics of exploration in modern science. By continuing the internationally-acclaimed success of Munich’s Universe Cluster of Excellence (2006–2018), the new ORIGINS Cluster will strive to reveal the origins of the innermost structures of the Universe, as well as explore the way in which life formed. Answering these questions remains one of the greatest challenges in scientific research. Scientists from the fields of astrophysics, astrobiology, biophysics and particle physics will collaborate to unearth new findings about the relationship between planet formation and the emergence of the first prebiotic molecules, and many others. With the inception of the new ORIGINS Cluster, the Munich–Garching research hub continues to be among the foremost research collaborations in this area of science.

The newly-funded ORIGINS Cluster is a collaborative initiative led by the Technical University Munich and the Ludwig Maximilian University, in partnership with the Max Planck Institutes of Astrophysics, Biochemistry, Extraterrestrial Physics, Physics and Plasma Physics, the Leibniz Supercomputing Center and the Deutsches Museum, along with ESO.
