08 Gennaio 2013: ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) ha iniziato una fase nuova e più avanzata dell’osservazione scientifica. Questa fase è conosciuta come Ciclo 1 della Prima scienza e durerà fino ad Ottobre 2013. La potenza del telescopio è stata considerevolmente aumentata: farà osservazioni con un maggior numero di antenne, distribuite su una distanza maggiore di quanto finora raggiunto, e per la prima volta userà antenne dell’Atacama Compact Array (ACA). Nonostante ALMA sia ancora in costruzione, le prime osservazioni scientifiche sono cominciate nel 2011. Questa fase era conosciuta come Ciclo 0 della Prima Scienza. ALMA ha già superato di molto il rendimento degli altri telescopi del suo genere e le capacità senza precedenti del telescopio hanno portato nell’ultimo anno ad una prima fase di emozionanti risultati scientifici (si vedano per esempio ann12101, eso1216, eso1239, e eso1248 ) Le osservazioni del Ciclo 0 sono cominciate con sole 16 delle 66 antenne previste dal progetto ...

04 Gennaio 2013: With Prof. Dr. Andreas Burkert (Universe Cluster) A gas cloud identified as G2 is rapidly moving toward the centre of the Milky Way. In 2013, it will make its closest approach to the supermassive black hole that is lurking there. The cloud has a mass a few times that of the Earth, and it is observable with the ESO Very Large Telescope in Chile. Such an observation will be extraordinary for several reasons: first, the passage of a gas cloud near — or into — a black hole has never been observed before. Also, the evolution of the cloud is expected to be very fast. Theoreticians will therefore be able to check the predictions of their models very quickly. Prof. Dr. Andreas Burkert, from the Excellence Cluster Universe, will discuss the possible fate of this cloud with the guests of the next Café & Kosmos, on 8 January 2013. Please ...
