A model ELT
The public enjoy a model of the up and coming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) at the ESO 2017 Open House Day that was held on Saturday 21 October. The model is significantly scaled down — the true ELT, set to receive first light in 2024, will house an array of 798 hexagonal mirror segments making up a 39-metre primary mirror. The entire ELT structure will be comparable in size to the Allianz Arena.
