Airglow and the Milky Way above Paranal
Three of the four Unit Telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) bask beneath the spectacular southern sky above ESO's Paranal Observatory in this panoramic scene from northern Chile.
The plane of our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is captured elegantly arching above the Observatory, as a red and green radiance — known as airglow — scatters the star-studded sky.
The numerous flaps, or louvers, seen circumventing the enclosures of two of the Unit Telescopes are there to maintain airflow and help keep the interior of the telescope in equilibrium with the surrounding atmosphere.
