Entering the ELT construction site
Taken on 25 May 2023, this 360 degree panorama shows the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) construction site. One day this colossal structure, located on Cerro Armazones in Chile’s Atacama Desert, will play host to the telescope and all its instruments, but for now the concrete house is filled with scaffolding and construction equipment. Looking up, you can catch a glimpse of the steel frame of the telescope’s dome. When complete, the dome will weigh a mighty 6100 tonnes and will be capable of rotating 360 degrees — just like this image.
