ALMA looking up at the Milky Way

This photograph shows ALMA, the most powerful ground-based telescope for observing the cool Universe — molecular gas and dust as well as the distant Universe. Situated in the Atacama desert ALMA is addressing some of the deepest questions of humanity: those of our cosmic origins, including the building blocks of stars, planets, galaxies, and life itself.
