A European ALMA antenna takes a ride on a transporter

On 23 June 2010, the first two European antennas for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) were successfully moved to new outdoor foundations at the 2900-metre altitude Operations Support Facility (OSF) in the Chilean Andes. In the picture, an antenna is being moved by Lore, one of the two ALMA transporters. The transporter vehicles are specifically designed to carry antennas which weigh more than 100 tonnes each, at up to 5000 metres altitude. ALMA, an international astronomy facility, is a partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile.
