A new perspective on scaffolding

This frog's-eye view of the Extremely Large Telescope's (ELT) dome and its inner structure shows the sheer size of the building site, as seen from the inside. As the work on the telescope's protective dome progresses, the inner structure is slowly taking shape as well. The giant ELT dome will house the telescope and its interior structure. Here still in scaffolding, the main structure will hold its five mirrors and optics, including the enormous 39-metre primary mirror. Producing such a large structure that can hold its mirrors precisely in place and not buckle under the weight is a feat of engineering, essential to achieve high-quality observations.
