Byron Engler is seen here checking a wavefront sensor on the MELT (miniscule-ELT). The MELT is being used as a test bench of some of the capabilities of ESO's future Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), and is primarily focused on recreating how light will be collected along the ELT's four mirrors. The MELT is being used to understand the challenges that the ELT will face once completed.
