Ein Meilenstein in der Mikroquasar-Forschung
Dies hier ist SS 433, ein Mikroquasar, der schon vor 40 Jahren entdeckt wurde und etwa 18 000 Lichtjahre von uns entfernt im Sternbild Aquila (Adler) steht. Dies ist jedoch das erste Bild des Quasars im Submillimeterbereich, aufgenommen vom Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Besonders interessant daran ist, dass es die heißen Jets zeigt, die von der heißen, wirbelnden Akkretionsscheibe um das Schwarze Loch im Zentrum von SS 433 ausgestoßen werden. Wegen seiner relativen Nähe ist SS 433 ein besonders lohnendes Objekt für die Forschung an Mikroquasaren und den von ihnen ausgestoßenen Jets.
Die deutlich sichtbare Korkenzieherform wird von einem Phänomen names Präzession hervorgerufen. Während die Materie nach außen strömt, taumelt die Achse der beiden Jets ähnlich wie ein Gyroskop oder ein langsamer werdender Kreisel, dessen Achse sich ganz ähnlicher Weise bewegt. Die Größenordnung dieses Korkenziehers in gewaltig: Das 5000-Fache der Größe unseres Sonnensystems.
Diese Beobachtung wurde ein Jahr später gemacht, nachdem dieselben Jets in ihrem Anfangsstadium im Zuge des Global Jet Watch-Projektes untersucht wurden. Die Abfolge dieser Beobachtungen erlaubt es den Forschern, Vorhersagen über den Verlauf der Jets anzustellen und zu überprüfen, was einen Meilenstein in der Erforschung von Mikroquasaren darstellt. Die Beobachtungsdaten haben auch eine Antwort auf die Frage geliefert, warum die Jets noch in einer so riesigen Entfernung von ihrem Ursprung so heiß sind – die Empfindlichkeit von ALMA erlaubte es den Forschern festzustellen, dass das Plasma wieder aufgeheizt wird, wenn nachfolgende Schübe der Jets expandieren und miteinander kollidieren.
