SPHERE kartografiert die Ceres-Oberfläche
Diese Bilder wurden im Abstand von zwei Wochen aufgenommen und zeigen die beiden Hemisphären von Ceres. Sie stellen die bislang besten bodengebundenen Beobachtungen des Zwergplaneten dar. Aufgenommen wurden sie mitdem SPHERE-Instrument am Very Large Telescope der ESO. Sie sind Teil eines Programms, das Mitte Juli 2015 begann und zum Ziel hat, eine polarimetrische Karte der Oberfläche zu erstellen.
Die Umlaufbahn von Ceres liegt zwischen der von Mars und Jupiter, einer Region die man als Asteroiden-Hauptgürtel bezeichnet. Ceres wurde im Jahre 1801 entdeckt und ist der größte Asteroid im Hauptgürtel. Sie stellt die größte Ansammlung von Wasser in der Nachbarschaft der Erde dar. Das meiste davon ist wahrscheinlich in Form von Wassereis im Mantelgestein gebunden.
Die Oberfläche des Zwergplaneten hat ungefähr die Größe von Indien und man erkennt auffällig helle Flecken auf diesen neuen Bildern. Diese mysteriösen hellen Flecken wurden auch schon von der NASA-Sonde Dawn gesichtet, die sich derzeit in einer Umlaufbahn um Ceres befindet. Astronomen haben sie schon ausgiebig untersucht, aber ihre wahre Natur bleibt noch immer unklar. Es besteht jedoch die Hoffnung, dass beim Vergleich der mittels SPHERE aufgenommenen Bilder mit denen von Dawn zur Erde gesendeten die Astronomen bald in der Lage sein werden, das Geheimnis von Ceres zu lüften.
