Martian Atacama

While the Atacama desert in Chile provides perfect viewing conditions for ESO's telescopes, the area is one of the most arid on the planet. The parched, barren landscape and the red hue could even pass for the surface of Mars. Cerro Paranal, home of ESO's Very Large Telescope, is seen in the background of this image.
