Das ELT-Instrument MICADO besteht das Preliminary Design Review

MICADO, das erste speziell für das Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) der ESO entworfene Abbildungssystem, hat einen wichtigen Meilenstein in der Designprüfung erreicht. Das MICADO-Konsortium traf sich zusammen mit einer Gruppe externer Experten aus der ganzen Welt in der Garchinger Zentrale der ESO zu einer einwöchigen intensiven Prüfung der Optik, Mechanik, Software, Elektronik und des Budgetplans des Instruments, um alle Bereiche zu erkennen, die weiterer Designarbeit bedürfen. Im Anschluss an das Treffen ging das MICADO-Team auf alle wichtigen Bedenken ein, die während der Überprüfung aufgeworfen wurden. Das Instrument hat nun die vorläufige Designprüfung formal bestanden. Nun folgt eine detailliertere Entwurfsphase, die zur endgültigen Überprüfung des Designs und zur Konstruktion der vielen Komponenten des Instruments führt.
MICADO (für englisch Multi-Adaptive Optics Imaging Camera for Deep Observations) ist sowohl für bildgebende als auch für spektrographische Beobachtungen ausgestattet und wird sich auf die Nah-Infrarot-Bildgebung und -Spektroskopie mit einer beispiellosen Kombination aus Empfindlichkeit und Genauigkeit konzentrieren. Um den Unschärfe-Effekt der Atmosphäre zu kompensieren, wird MICADO zwei verschiedene Arten von adaptiven Optiksystemen verwenden. Die eine wird den deformierbaren M4-Spiegel des Teleskops nutzen, um scharfe Bilder über ein enges Sichtfeld zu liefern, die andere nutzt die vollen Möglichkeiten des MAORY-Moduls für adaptive Optik, um ein größeres Sichtfeld zu ermöglichen.
MICADO wird die Flexibilität bieten, viele Arten von Objekten zu beobachten, und seine spektroskopischen Fähigkeiten werden unser Verständnis der Zusammensetzung dieser Objekte erheblich vertiefen. Das Instrument verspricht, einige der spannendsten Fragen der Astronomie zu erforschen, darunter die Frage, wie sich Exoplaneten bilden, wie schwarze Löcher im Zentrum von Galaxien diese beeinflussen und wie sich das Universum im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt hat.
