Joulukomeetta Lovejoy jäi Paranalin haaviin

ESO:n Paranalin observatorio Chilessä taltioi hiljattain löydetyn komeetta Lovejoyn upeisiin valokuviin ja kuvasarjavideoon. Komeetta koristi eteläistä taivasta sen selvittyä odottamatta lähikohtaamisesta Auringon kanssa.
ESO:n Gabriel Brammer otti kuvasarjan uutta videota varten torstaina 22. joulukuuta 2011. Gabriel oli lopettelemassa työvuoroaan avustavana tähtitieteilijänä Paranalin observatoriolla, kun komeetta Lovejoy nousi horisontin yläpuolelle juuri ennen aamunkoittoa.
Gabriel Brammerin omin sanoin: "Työvuoroni viimeisenä aamuna yritin napata sen kamerallani ennen auringonnousua. Komeetan pyrstö näkyi helposti paljaalle silmälle ja kuunsirpin, komeetan, Linnunradan sekä lasertähden yhdistelmä näytti lähes yhtä vaikuttavalta paljaalle silmälle kuin pitkän valotuksen valokuvissakin."
Kuvasarja näyttää myös VLT-teleskoopin lasertähden kynänohuen valonsäteen Linnunrata kauniina taustanaan, tähtitieteilijöiden tehdessä yön viimeisiä havaintojaan.
ESO:n optiikka-asiantuntija Guillaume Blanchard otti erinomaisen laajakulmakuvan komeetta Lovejoysta ja ESO:n valokuvalähettiläs Yuri Beletsky taltioi spektaakkelin Santiago de Chilessä. Blanchard sanoi: "Minusta tämä komeetta on joululahja ihmisille, jotka viettävät joulun Paranalilla".
Tämä krkas komeetta nähtiin myös kansainvälisellä avaruusasemalla toisessa häikäisevässä kuvasarjassa 21. joulukuuta miehistön kuvatessa salamoita Maapallon yön puolella.
Komeetta Lovejoy on ollut tähtitieteilijäyhteisön puheenaiheena viimeisten muutaman viikon ajan. Australialainen harrastajatähtitieteilijä Terry Lovejoy löysi sen 27. marraskuuta ja luokitteli sen Kreutzin aurinkosurffaajaksi, koska sen rata vei sen hyvin lähelle Aurinkoa [1]. Joulukuun puolivälissä komeetta syöksyi Auringon koronaan, mikä oli paljon odotettu tapahtuma, ja ohitti Auringon pinnan vain 140 000 kilometrin etäisyydeltä. Läheltä piti -tapaus todellakin...
Komeetan odotettiin hajoavan ja höyrystyvän, mutta sen sijaan se selvisi höyryävänkuumasta kohtaamisestaan Auringon kanssa ja ilmaantui uudelleen muutamaa päivää myöhemmin, kaikkien suureksi yllätykseksi. Se on nyt näkyvillä eteläisellä pallonpuoliskolla, näyttäytyen aamunkoitteessa, ja esittää kirkkaan, miljoonia kilometrejä pitkän tomuhiukkasista koostuvan pyrstönsä, jota aurinkotuuli puhaltaa poispäin komeetan ytimestä.
Lovejoy jatkaa nyt erittäin eksentrisellä radallaan Auringon ympäri ja katoaa jälleen aurinkokunnan äärilaitamille. Olisi kiinnostavaa tietää selviytyykö se matkasta ja ilmaantuu uudelleen taivaallemme 314 vuoden kuluttua, kuten on ennustettu.
Tämän loistavan, vuoden 2011 joulukomeetta Lovejoyn kuvasarjan myötä ESO toivottaa kaikille Iloista Joulua ja Onnellista Uutta Vuotta.

[1] Kreutzin aurinkosurffaajat ovat lähtöisin komeettaperheestä, jonka uskotaan syntyneen yhden suuren komeetan hajotessa 1100-luvulla. Komeettaperheen osaset kiertävät nykyään Aurinkoa samalla radalla kuin alkuperäinen komeetta.

VISTA toimii infrapuna-alueella ja on maailman suurin kartoitusteleskooppi. VLT Survey Telescope on suurin vartavasten taivaan näkyvän valon kartoitukseen suunniteltu teleskooppi. ESO on maailman suurimman tähtitieteellisen projektin, vallankumouksellisen ALMA-teleskoopin eurooppalainen yhteistyökumppani. Parhaillaan ESO suunnittelee 40-metrin kokoluokan optisen/lähi-infrapuna-alueen European Extremely Large -teleskooppia (E-ELT) josta tulee “maailman suurin tähtitaivasta havainnoiva silmä”.
