Upea näkymä upeasta spiraalista
ESO:n Very Large Telescope eli VLT-kaukoputken MUSE-instrumentti Chilessä on havainnut NGC 1365 galaksia, joka on kaksinkertainen sauvaspiraaligalaksi, joka sijaitsee noin 56 miljoonan valovuoden päässä Fornax-galaksijoukossa. Tämä upea värikuva pystyttiin rakentamaan näistä havainnoista. Galaksi tunnetaan myös nimellä Suuri sauvaspiraaligalaksi sen kahden keskellä sijaitsevan tähdistä koostuvan sauvanmuotoisen rakenteen ansiosta.
NGC 1365:n kaksi sauvaa on harvinainen ilmiö, ja niiden arvellaan saaneen alkunsa galaksin pyörimisen ja tähtien monimutkaisen dynamiikan yhteisvaikutuksista. Sen suurin tähtisauva on liian suuri näkyäkseen tässä kuvassa, mutta se yhdistää ulommat spiraalihaarat keskipisteeseensä. Se mitä näemme on paljon pienempi toinen tähtisauva, joka sijaitsee pääsauvan sisällä. On todennäköistä, että tämä toinen sauva kiertyy pääsauvasta riippumatta pyörien nopeammin kuin muu galaksi.
Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer eli MUSE-instrumentti kuvasi kohdetta optisessa- ja infrapunavalossa, joka näyttää galaksin keskialueen kaasun ja pölyn. Instrumentti on asennettu Yepun-teleskooppiin, joka on yksi neljästä 8,2-metrisestä VLT:n muodostavasta teleskoopista. Tämän instrumentin ominaisuudet ovat mahdollistaneet erittäin tarkkojen ja yksityiskohtaisten tutkimusten tekemisen useista maailmankaikkeutemme kohteista. Näihin kuuluvat mm. kaukaisten galaksien tutkimus, supermassiiviset mustat aukot ja gravitaatioaaltojen lähteet.
