Pacific perspective
The extreme altitude of the the mountains in Chile's Atacama desert make for usually cloudless vistas, day or night, allowing for brilliant observations of the Universe.
In this image, it is possible to see the Pacific Ocean in the distance, below the clouds. It was taken from ESO's Paranal Observatory, which is home to the world-leading Very Large Telescope (VLT).
